Winetricks is pretty essential for GUI LCD font smoothing!

Here's the script for fast HL2MP startup (from http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wiwimod/index.php?page=howto+steam#cli):

Remember, -dxlevel 81 only needs to be used once! The video settings will be reset if it is included again!
